About me

Since May 2010, I hold an endowed professorship in Tobacco Control Research at the School for Public Health and Primary Care (CAPHRI), Department of Health Promotion, Maastricht University. My professorship is financed by the Dutch Cancer Society.

I am also employed Scientific Director Tobacco Control senior researcher at the Netherlands Expertise Center for Tobacco Control (NET) at the Trimbos Institute

After a study Psychology at Nijmegen Radboud University, I moved to Maastricht University in 1988. In Maastricht, my interest in tobacco research started with studying the effectiveness of a wide range of smoking cessation programmes, including community interventions, general practitioner programmes, computerised smoking cessation tailoring interventions, and worksite programmes. My research interests were related to the psychological aspects of tobacco addiction.  Finally, I conducted my PhD research on the efficacy of worksite smoking cessation interventions.

From 1998 until 2013 a worked at STIVORO, the Dutch expert Centre on Tobacco Control, where I continued doing research in the field of tobacco control, collaborating with various research groups in the Netherlands as well as abroad, resulting in publications on diverse tobacco related topics, including harm reduction, genetic aspects of smoking, the efficacy of cessation methods, computer tailoring as a cessation aid, smoking prevention programmes for adolescents, and determinants of smoking onset and smoking cessation. In 2013, I founded the Dutch Network for Tobacco Research (NNVT), a network of nicotine and tobacco researchers in the Netherlands. The first national conference was organized on 29 November 2013.

My current scientific interests focus on the public health aspects of tobacco use and include political determinants of the implementation of  tobacco control policy. My book on how tobacco control policy comes about at the national level, using the Netherlands as a case study, is published in 2018 with Palgrave McMillan and available open access or may be bought if you prefer a hard copy.
